Introduction:

Welcome to Methods for data collection with human participants

Many areas of scientific and technical research ultimately aim to develop technologies that are used by people, either as services or as products that become an integral part of everyday life. To determine whether a technology is effective, usable, and appropriate within a specific context, experiments involving human participants are often essential. Such experiments can be both time-consuming and costly, and if they are not carefully designed and conducted, the resulting data may be unreliable or difficult to interpret. This course combines theoretical foundations with practical training in the design and execution of experiments involving human participants. The objective is to help participants avoid common methodological pitfalls while improving the validity and reliability of collected data. Drawing on knowledge of cognitive and perceptual processes underlying human interaction with the environment, the course examines how these processes influence different data collection methods and experimental paradigms. The course content is motivated by real-world research scenarios, including the evaluation of sound environments and interactive systems, assessment of hearing-aid performance, measurement of listening effort, and related applications. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, and hands-on exercises, participants will design, conduct, and analyze experiments involving human participants. The course is organized into four sessions, consisting of two days in March and two days in April.
