Introduction:

Welcome to Academic Writing in English

Description:

This PhD-level academic writing course will focus on writing in English language for international audiences. The course will prepare you to be an engaged academic writer in English now with strategies for sustaining good writing habits into the future.

We will begin by reviewing the foundation of good arguments, academic writing conventions and specific field-associated norms as a way to collectively orient ourselves to the aims, audiences and purposes of academic writing in English. We will focus on the aim of publishing for international academic audiences, for example via specific peer-reviewed journals, edited anthologies, academic manuscripts and/or international conferences in your field. We will then shift towards focusing on individual writing goals and choose a specific outlet/audience to focus on for the final writing portfolio. This will guide the remainder of the course and conclude with a focus on individual goals for academic writing in English with an opportunity for 1:1 feedback.

Course readings and discussions will include discussions about the (moving) role and documentation expectations of AI in academic publishing, strategies for organizing (and maintaining) the writing process, and refining and revising writing, including as part of the (re)submission process.

The course will not focus on the basic grammar and writing of the English language but will provide resources for those looking for additional support in writing correctly in English.
