Introduction: Description: The next generation DNA sequencing technologies now allow large-scale high throughput identification of microbial diversity in any environmental sample. The most popular method, 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, will be central in the course. It includes all steps in the analysis: sampling, DNA extraction, preparation of the sample for sequencing, sequencing (Illumina platform), and bioinformatic analysis. In addition, an overview of state-of-the-art methods to investigate microbial communities is given which includes metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, metaproteomics, related statistical analyses and single cell microbiology. The course includes lectures, hands-on, group exercises/discussions and student presentations.
