Description: The general assumption of the seminar is that the teaching of any school subject is not only about the teaching of this particular school subject, but of (cultural) expectations behind that school subject, transforming the child into whatever is desired in connection of these expectations with regard to the future citizens. It is rather easy to make this ideas obvious with the school subjects like language, social sciences, geography and history, but more challenging when it comes to math and science, for the latter are believed to be free of any cultural or personal aspects.

The seminar starts from the assumption that the idea of a culturally or personally free math and science education needs indeed some ideological archeology to evidence their constitutive logics in the curriculum, the syllabi, the textbooks and the teaching in its actual classroom practice. The major challenge of the seminar will thus be to combine the historical/political aspect of curriculum formation, deriving from the idea of the ideal future citizen, and the pedagogical aspect of classroom practice in mathematics and science, (re)producing the idea of the learning child (to become this citizen).

The aim is to get an integrated view on the two school subjects math and science in the interplay of the child and the future citizen through the combination of historical-political and educational aspects in research.
