Description:
Discussing form and aesthetic in relation to art, architecture and design has a central role in all artistic educations. But when discussing and judging a piece of work, whether it is a professional or a students work, it is well known, that it quickly becomes a matter of taste, which is destructive for the development of a professional attitude. The language we use to describe aesthetics is one of the most flourishing part in our culture: methods, terminology and tradition differ from country to country, from school to school and from person to person.
The result is a weaker professionalism in the aesthetic discussions and competences compared to other scientific areas.
This Ph.D course will investigate the phenomenon of form and how we describe and understand form and composition in nature, architecture, design and art by looking into other related areas, such as perception, brain research and cognitive psychology.
We will study a selected number of theories and try to practice different types/methods of analysis - and the participants who write an essay (5 ECTS) will be asked to present a specific theory during the course.
