Introduction
Welcome to Translating Evidence into Practice Applied Clinical Implementation in Healthcare
Program: Health Care, Health Promotion and Organizations (HCHPO)
Description: This course provides an in-depth introduction to implementation science with a strong emphasis on practical application in healthcare settings. It is aimed at PhD students working with clinically relevant research projects and equips participants with foundational knowledge of implementation theories, models, and frameworks, as well as the skills to apply these to real-world challenges.
The course is structured across three teaching days over a three-month period:
Day 1 introduces the core theoretical foundations of implementation science, including key theories, models, and frameworks for understanding how research can be translated into practice.
·Day 2 focuses on application. Participants will work directly with their own PhD projects, identifying implementation opportunities and developing a theory-informed implementation strategy through individual reflection, peer feedback, and group-based exercises.
Day 3 focuses on evaluation and sustainment. Participants will revisit their implementation efforts with particular attention to contextual factors, barriers and facilitators encountered in the early stages of implementation. The emphasis is not on full implementation, but on developing a deeper understanding of implementation processes and identifying strategies for adapting, embedding, and advancing implementation efforts beyond the course.
Teaching methods: Teaching methods include interactive lectures, group workshops, participant presentations with structured feedback, and project-based supervision, with a strong emphasis on active participation and application to participants’ own PhD projects.
Form of evaluation: To pass the course, participants are required to:
- Deliver a short presentation of their PhD project on the first course day
- Submit a one-page implementation plan related to their PhD project no later than one week after the first two course days
- Present their implementation progress and reflections during the final course day
Key literature: A detailed list of required readings, including specific textbooks, articles, and reports, will be provided after the deadline for enrolment.
