Introduction
Welcome to Epidemiology – basic principles
Program: EB (Epidemiology and Biostatistics)
Description: This course deals with basic principles of epidemiology and will prepare the students for further courses in advanced epidemiology. The course consist of lectures and group work based on scientific papers.
The main themes are:
- Prevalence and incidence measures and measures of associations
- Observational design, including aggregated, cross-sectional, cohort, case-control studies and Randomized Controlled Trials
- Sources of information for epidemiological studies with presentation of the concepts of precision and validity
- Systematic errors in epidemiology, including bias and confounding
- Interactions and effectmodification
- Applications of epidemiology in different areas, including clinical epidemiology
Prerequisites: None
Form of evaluation: Participation in group work and discussion.

Literature: Suggested readings in basic epidemiology books and scientific papers

Important information concerning PhD courses: There is a no-show fee of DKK 3,000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before the start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately four months before start of the course.
We cannot ensure any seats before the deadline for enrolment, all participants will be informed after the deadline, approximately 3 weeks before the start of the course.
To attend courses at the Doctoral School in Medicine, Biomedical Science and Technology you must be enrolled as a PhD student.
