Manufacturing regenerative medicine therapies

Introduction

Welcome to Manufacturing regenerative medicine therapies

Program: B ***mandatory course **** (also relevant for CSLTM and BEN)

Description:

This two-day PhD course introduces participants to the principles of regenerative medicine, focusing on the tools and techniques that drive the development of therapies based on cells, biomaterials, and other advanced technologies that support tissue repair. As the field rapidly advances towards clinical translation, understanding the interplay between biological systems, technical platforms, and regulatory frameworks is essential for researchers in the biomedical sciences.

Participants will learn the key aspects of regenerative medicine manufacturing, including stem cell isolation and characterization, bioreactor systems for cell expansion, and potency assays. The course also covers state-of-the-art biomaterials and biofabrication techniques such as hydrogels and 3D bioprinting, which enable efficient cell delivery, tissue integration, and the structural and functional restoration of damaged or diseased tissue. A comprehensive overview of the European regulatory landscape for Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs), including the European Medicines Agency (EMA) guidelines and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) requirements, is also provided. Emerging enabling technologies that improve regenerative therapies are also discussed. Particular attention is paid to autologous tissue-derived products and microbiome modulators, whose role in immunomodulation and tissue repair is increasingly recognized.

The course combines expert-led lectures with hands-on laboratory exercises. Through practical lab work and group assignments, participants will gain valuable experience and critical insight into the challenges of developing and testing novel regenerative therapies.
