Description:

The course focuses on research involving children, examining theoretical, methodological, and ethical perspectives on child-centered research. Topics include children’s agency, research methods such as arts-based approaches, and ethical considerations including consent and GDPR. It also explores how research with children differs from research with adults and how categories such as ‘children’ and ‘students’ are constructed and understood. The course is organized in collaboration between AAU and VIA UC and welcomes PhD students working with children across all fields. This year, the course will be offered for the second time, following the same model that received highly positive evaluations last year.

Teaching methods:
The first two-day seminar includes lectures and discussions led by Martin Blok Johansen and Gro Hellesdatter Jacobsen, complemented by guest lectures from leading Danish experts in the field (TBA). A substantial part of the course is devoted to structured group work, which received highly positive feedback from participants last year. In addition, the course offers excellent opportunities for networking with other early-career scholars, including a social dinner on the first evening (self-paid).
Following the initial two-day seminar, participants will develop academic papers, which will be reviewed by the lecturers (Martin and Gro) to identify patterns and issues related to children’s perspectives and research views. These themes and papers will then be discussed in peer groups during the second one-day seminar. This collaborative process fosters critical reflection and deeper engagement with the course themes. The papers are also intended to serve as thesis texts
The second seminar will include a guest lecture by an expert from a related, but different field [TBA], who will challenge well-known perspectives and introduce new, critical approaches to child-centered research. This intervention encourages participants to reconsider and expand their methodological and theoretical frameworks.

Important information concerning PhD courses: 

There is a no-show fee of DKK 3,000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before the start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately four months before start of the course.

We cannot ensure any seats before the deadline for enrolment, all participants will be informed after the deadline, approximately 3 weeks before the start of the course.
