Description:

Glass materials lack long-range order, but feature both short-range order (e.g., coordination numbers and Qn-speciation) and medium-range order (e.g., ring statistics and modifier clustering). As an additional complication, glasses also feature spatial and temporal fluctuations (heterogeneities) in their structure. Although it is a very challenging task, characterizing and quantifying these structural features across varying length scales is feasible due to the fast development of structural characterization techniques. The structural characterization is a necessity for the design of new glass materials with tailored properties. For the planned Ph.D. course, we will introduce various experimental characterization techniques, such as solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, x-ray and neutron scattering, and vibrational spectroscopy. Several distinguished lecturers will be invited to present the fundamental principles of these methods as well as their recent progress in translating this knowledge into the understanding of the structure of different types of glasses. The students will communicate with both fellow students and lecturers, read the pre-assigned literature, and do assignments from lecturers through group work.

Important information concerning PhD courses: We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 3000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately four months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year. We look forward to your registrations.
