My PhD project takes place in a home care organization in Sweden. This problematic process is related to the caregivers being forced to shop groceries for the seniors. The senior citizens dependent on home care want to be able to choose their own groceries and other necessities, as well as controlling their own payments. They also have poor pension so they want to both choose the products and the price range as well. The caretakers want to work with care and the seniors want to get their freedom of choice back, that they feel has been taken away. The solution is an artifact called Skafferiet (Swedish word for “pantry”). The artifact supports a caring conversation between the two parties and supports the caregivers in their care and professional progression. The artifact supports the freedom of choice for the seniors, as they choose from products now and pay in the application.
The challenge type that fits this ADR approach, is addressing a specific problem in a specific organization by intervening and evaluating (Sein et al., 2011). To carry out the investigation of the posed problem, observations and interviews and the method approach of ADR seem fitting when gathering empirical data. ADR seems like it is the best fit, as this project means acting within the organization and intervening and evaluating. As this is simultaneously an extensive design research project, the mix of action and design research seems like the most suitable fit.
