Welcome to Startup and Management of a Biotech Company
A large percntage of people with a PhD in medicine or biotechnology will either start their own company or be part of a biotech or pharma company. The way these companies think or the way venture capital companies evaluate is quite different from the way a researcher think. In order to be prepared it is a good idea to get some input from people that have gone through these processes and tried and succeeded in this. Starting up a biotech company from a research idea and good data takes a lot of know how and things one has to be aware of.
- Patenting of the idea
- To writing a business plan
- finding investors, and convince them for investing in the idea
- setting up a development plan
- pre-clinical testing, pharm/tox studies
- GMP production of medicine
- formulation, route of administration of the drug
- choosing indications
- managing a company and employees, and many more.
- Using MS Project
- Net present value (NPV) calculations
In this course we will give an introduction and overview of these different aspects and come with a huge amount of experience in setting up biotech companies. In this course you will be taught in this.
Prerequisites: Basic understanding of biology/biochemestry
Learning objectives:
- Be able to write a business plan
- Be able to make a development plan
- Have know how about patenting
- Know how on how to attract venture capital companies
Teaching methods: In small groups an imaginary biotech company is being setup. Along the way the students receive lectures on the different topics needed to setup a biotech company and write a business plan. During the lectures students have to present different parts of their business plan/company.
Criteria for assessment: During the exam the students as a group will have to convince the examiners and censor (the potential investors) to invest in their business plan. The students will be graded individually.

Important information concerning PhD courses: We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 5,000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately three months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year. We look forward to your registrations.
