• Description:

This course addresses some of the most relevant topics associated to Radio Resource Management (RRM) for broadband wireless systems. With a scarce available spectrum, RRM aims at maximizing the efficiency of the system radio resource usage while providing and controlling the Quality of Service (QoS) according to the different traffic QoS requirements. The main contribution to future wireless system performance improvement will come from the introduction of additional small cells to complement traditional macro site installations, i.e. migrating towards heterogeneous network (HetNet) topologies. With small cells, new RRM issues arise between the small and macro-cellular layers, and between the small cells themselves due to customer deployed small cell solutions. This development emphasizes the need for more distributed RRM as well as simplification of the management by auto-configuration and auto-optimization.

The course will offer a thorough introduction to RRM in LTE-Advanced, as well provide pointers to possible enhancements and paradigm shifts for next generation systems (5G). LTE-Advanced will be used as the primary reference standard for presenting the various RRM mechanisms, and the anticipated RRM paradigm shifts when migrating from LTE-Advanced towards 5G.

The course will cover RRM disciplines for different deployments and network architectures, including HetNets and new (distributed) RRM techniques for small cells, inter-cell interference coordination and resource sharing, mobility handling, traffic steering and Self-Organizing Networks (SON) techniques. Classical RRM mechanisms such as dynamic link adaptation, resource allocation (scheduling), and power control, are also presented. Towards 5G, the course will address options for more flexible scheduling options (e.g. variable transmission time intervals), design of an interference-aware physical layer and spatial
domain interference management and mitigation, among other enhancements.

The course will consist of a series of lectures, mixed with theoretical and practical (computer-based) exercises.
Prerequisites: basic knowledge of mobile and wireless communication systems as obtained through the M.Sc. engineering studies at Aalborg University is expected.

    Important information concerning PhD courses
We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 5,000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately three months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year. We look forward to your registrations.
