This course deals with the stability and control of modern power systems with a high penetration of renewable energy sources.Power system is undergoing tremendous transformation as non-conventional renewable energy sources like wind and photovoltaic are introduced. While such renewable sources are very good for the sustainable harnessing of energy, they are altering the way power system was designed to operate.

First of all they are inherently stochastic in nature due to their dependence upon local weather conditions and secondly they do not use the conventional large synchronous generators. Their power electronic converter interface decouples them from the grid frequency interaction with respect to inertial response and synchronizing power. Moreover, their dependency upon weather may lead to wide variations in power generation capability. At the same time, they might not contribute to the grid frequency stability; especially if they are on maximum power point tracking control. In the event of faults, they have limited power to contribute to the short circuit currents.

On the positive side, the advances in power electronic converter controls, imparts them fast controllability. So they can be controlled to inject reactive current and assist voltage voltage stability. They may also be controlled to provide emulated inertia and primary frequency regulation provided that they have some energy storage.

- Control opportunities and limitations provided by the converter control in RES.

- The concepts would be demonstrated through the appropriate simultation tools like PSCAD and/or DigSILENT.

Important information concerning PhD courses: We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 5,000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately three months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year.
