Welcome to Architectural Anthropology - Approaches and Analysis

Description:

Qualitative research methods developed in anthropology are increasingly used among other disciplines e.g. architecture, urban planning and design. But how can anthropological approaches be combined with methods from architecture? And what are the analytical implications of combining such approaches? The course will focus on how anthropological method and analysis can be developed in relation to architecture, housing, city, space and built environments. The course is relevant for you, if you use fieldwork /qualitative interviews / participant observation in your project, or if you are currently analyzing your qualitative data. The focus will be on how to process the data and move from field work / data collection to analyzing and writing up of your thesis.

The specific subjects will be adjusted to the needs and interests of the course participants, but may include discussions about:

-          Organizing, coding and analyzing empirical data

-          Combining methods from architecture and anthropology

-          Visual ethnography and different types of registration

-          Forms of writing about and representing data in your thesis

The discussions will concentrate on the participants’ own presentations of their current work and considerations. Before the course all participants are therefore obliged to send a paper of 5 pages demonstrating the projects’ approach to analyzing data – preferably a text that can afterwards be rewritten to form part of the thesis.

Important information concerning PhD courses We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 5,000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately three months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year. We look forward to your registrations.
