Welcome to Disordered Materials under Extreme Conditions
Description:
The structure and properties of disordered materials (glasses and amorphous solids) depend not only on the temperature, pressure, and composition, but also on their complete formation history, e.g., thermal and pressure histories. By understanding the response of disordered materials to extreme conditions, such as high temperature, pressure, stress, cooling rate, and radiation, it is possible to design them in a way to withstand such conditions, as well as to utilize such conditions to synthesize them with superior properties. However, despite recent efforts of scientists, numerous challenging questions concerning the above-mentioned issues still remain unanswered. For the planned Ph.D. course, we introduce the state-of-art knowledge about the preparation of poor glass-formers (including both metallic and oxide glasses) using aerodynamic levitation and hyperquenching techniques and the subjection of glasses to high pressure and/or high temperature conditions. Both experimental and computational studies will be included and advanced tools for the in situ and ex situ characterization of these materials will also be presented and. Several distinguished lecturers will be invited to present their recent progress in understanding structure and properties of disordered materials under extreme conditions. Each of the Ph.D. students will briefly present his/her research project to the whole class and communicate with both students and lecturers. The students will do some assignments from lecturers through group work.

Important information concerning PhD courses We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 5,000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately three months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year. We look forward to your registrations.
