Description:
The course will focus on advanced pre-, per- and postoperative optimization of the patient. Science based methods to improve the condition of the patient before surgery will be addressed. Especially new results regarding the interaction of pain and pain treatment on persistent post operative pain will be presented.
The course will focus on risk factors, pathophysiology , optimization, and patient reported outcome measures.

The course will include:
• preoperative conditioning based on new results in pain evaluation, physical training, coaching, social programmes, life style and pain treatment (3 lectures)
• new concepts and results of multimodal pre-medication (1 lecture)
• new technologies in minimal invasive surgery and new technologies in measurement of the surgical stress response using microdialysis and new serological parameters (2 lectures)
• new results in local infiltration, intra-articular, regional and general analgesia (2 lectures)
• rationale and science behind oxygen therapy and early intensive training (2 lectures)
• new ideas in advanced pain measurement of the early hours of the postoperative period (2 lectures)
• advanced science based postoperative pain treatment (2 lectures)
• choice of outcome measurement, clinical relevant effect of treatment, minimal relevant statistical difference and sample size in planning research within accelerated stay programmes (2 lectures)

Important information concerning PhD courses
We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 5,000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately three months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year. We look forward to your registrations.
