Welcome to 20th course on: Translational Neurobiology of the Pain System Patient and Drug Profiling using Translational Mechanistic Pain Biomarkers

Description: This is the 20th annual international Ph.D. course on the translational neurobiology of the pain system held by SMI.

The purpose of the course is to provide an updated on recent translational mechanistic pain biomarker development, how biomarkers can be used in profiling/stratification of pain patients, and their role in profiling/evaluating the efficacy of new and existing compounds. In recent years the area of human mechanistic pain biomarkers have developed rapidly and an increased number of different quantitative tools are now available. Mechanistic pain biomarkers will be the future framework for the efforts in developing new and efficient individualized pain management regimes. This field has not yet developed sufficiently into clinical applications and promising data are still lacking. There is a need to further studies and better understanding. Quantitative and mechanistic profiling of chronic pain patients entering early clinical trials has been more promising and has provided new opportunities for the pharmaceutical industry to target the development of new analgesics. Basic, experimental, clinical, and drug studies will be presented during the course by recognized international scientists. Laboratory demonstrations will be performed to give participants some hands on experience. The course is arranged over two days, and approx. half of the participants will come from different international institutions and companies. Undergraduate and graduate students at SMI will participate.

Prerequisites A basic understanding of pain mechanisms, for update see Textbook of Pain, Section 1: Neurobiology of Pain. Literature Selected papers and book chapters will be announced to the participants shortly before the course.

Important information concerning PhD courses  We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 5,000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately three months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year. We look forward to your registrations.
