Description: Three-phase voltage source converters (VSC) are the most commonly used power electronic converters. Different types of VSC are used depending on application, power rating, semiconductor devices used etc. The pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques are the key techniques to control such a VSC in order to obtain the desired AC output voltage.

The performance of the converter is very much dependent upon the PWM technique. Detailed theoretical and practical aspects related to PWM techniques for the two-level, three-level, and modular multilevel converter will be presented during the course.
Different topics to be covered in this course are:
• Two-level converter
o Sinusoidal PWM, Space Vector PWM, Discontinuous PWM
o Optimal and Random PWM
o Performance analysis of different PWM in terms of current, voltage ripple (harmonics), switching loss etc.
• Three-level converter
o Sinusoidal PWM, Space Vector PWM, Discontinuous PWM, Virtual vector based PWM
o Optimal PWM
o Performance analysis of different PWM in terms of current, voltage ripple, switching loss etc.
• Modular multilevel converter
o Centralized PWM
o Decentralized PWM
o DC-link voltage balancing
