CANCELLED: Anaerobic digestion for waste treatment and renewable energy production

This course is cancelled this year, but it will be offered again in 2016. Some of the elements in this course will be offered in "Biorefineries for the production of fuels, chemicals and feed".

Description: Anaerobic digestion (AD) – the microbial degradation of biomass without oxygen – is recognized as sustainable waste treatment process for both producing renewable energy in the form of biogas and recycling nutrients as a fertilizer product. Optimization of the AD process includes increasing the specific methane yield, adaptation to new biomass resources and new treatment concepts to increase the benefits over feedstock costs.

The aim of the course is to give insight into the fundamental laws and the technology of anaerobic digestion as a process for waste treatment and renewable energy production. It will give an overview of the microbiology of the process and its application for large-scale processes.
The course will deal with the following topics: The AD pathway and the involved microbial groups; inhibition and adaptation mechanisms; monitoring and control of the AD process; reactor design for anaerobic treatment of waste, wastewater and energy crops; low and high-tech process design, sustainability of AD; synergy of AD and agriculture; AD in the biorefinery context.
The course will be scheduled back-to-back to the Ph.D. course “Biorefinery processes” (June 15-19, 2015), also given at the Section for Sustainable Biotechnology.
