Description: A number of scholars in recent years have debated on the creation of power by social order and how the relations of power create constrains and possibilities that can confer a capacity for social action. This capacity enables actors to make things happen which would not otherwise occur. The way social change can be explained within a power analytic is the central interest of this course. In particular, this course explores and operationalize an emerging conceptualization of power as empowerment through discourse formation and coalitions in planning practice as well as the performance of policy actors and planners in changing and transforming existing planning practice.
The programme
The programme will consist of three elements. The first element will be presentations by the course team on a diverse range of themes relating to conceptualising and researching discourses and performance in planning, which will lead into open and wide ranging discussions. The second element of the programme is devoted to presentations by the participating PhD researchers, who will give a 15-20 minute presentation focusing on a selected issue, elaborating their conceptual framework. PhD researchers are encouraged to address the issues that are most challenging in their research. The presentations will run in twin tracks, chaired by different members of the course team. The third element of the programme will be interactive sessions that are designed to help identify the lessons that might be learned from the course, and will focus on aspects of research design.
