Description: There is a rapid development in Photovoltaics (PV) as a reliable source of renewable energy. The objective of this course is to give an understanding of the operation, design of Photovoltaic Power Systems. Hands-on experience is provided in the state-of-the-art Photovoltaic Systems laboratory where the participants will perform tests on PV array modelling, characterization and diagnostics, MPPT and plant design. The course is divided in two days, as follows:

DAY1: (Solar Cells)

The operating principle of the most common PV cells will be presented and their manufacturing processes will be described. Modelling techniques starting with cells and ending with PV plants are introduced. Then, characterization and diagnostic procedures using I-V curves, impedance measurement and imaging techniques are presented.

DAY2: (Energy harvesting and plant design)

In the second day, MPPT techniques for maximizing the efficiency in all operating conditions (including rapid irradiance change, partial shading) are introduced. Then, for large PV plants, a design procedure will be presented aiming at minimizing the levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Verification using PVSYS software is included.

Prerequisites:

Basic experience in Matlab/Simulink
Fee: the fee is 7.000 DKK for industry people, 5.000 DKK for PhD students or academics outside of Denmark and 1000 DKK for PhD students in Denmark. The fee includes coffee, lunch for all days, gala dinner and copy of slides
