Description:

Microgrids needs IT and ICT systems deployed together with power electronics components. This course introduces telecommunications technologies, basics of communication systems and their protocols to electrical engineers.
The course describes some examples of using communications with microgrids in order to implement different functionalities. Distributed algorithms of synchronization between the microgrid and the main grid, as well as distributed islanding detection are presented. Hierarchical and distributed control architectures are presented and the communication system impact is described. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) for Microgrids provides real-time monitoring of energy and power quality measurements. Technologies like Power Line Communications and wireless (WAN and PAN) are presented with examples of Zigbee and 6LoWPAN. Energy harvesting wireless sensors are introduced and shown in residential and wide area microgrid applications. .

Prerequisites: Matlab/Simulink knowledge is recommended for the exercises.
