Description: Three-phase power converters have traditionally been used for a wide range of applications including motor drives, uninterruptible power supplies, power quality conditioners and more recently for the grid interfacing of renewable sources. Because of their popularity and ever-expanding improvement, many converter topologies and modulation techniques have since been developed with no one topology presently suiting all applications. It is thus appropriate to understand existing topologies to a certain extent, before a sound recommendation can be made for a specific application. For that, a few topologies commonly used for ac-dc, dc-ac or ac-ac energy conversion are discussed, together with their modulation techniques.
