Description: The objective of this 3.5-day PhD course is to provide a presentation on elementary computational fluid dynamics (CFD). It will provide: (1) an insight into the philosophy and power of CFD; (2) an understanding of the nature of the fluid dynamics equations; (3) a familiarity with finite volume method (FVM), the core of most in-house CFD codes and commercial CFD packages, which includes e.g., different levels of discretization, different spatial and temporal discretization schemes, assessment of the schemes, pressure-velocity coupling algorithms, under-relaxation, boundary conditions, solvers, and so on; (4) practices and demos on solving relatively simple problems by programming; (5) a familiarity with flow through porous media and multiphase flow and their modeling; (6) a familiarity with turbulent flows and their modeling; (7) a familiarity with commercial CFD packages to solve complicated engineering problems; (8) a number of hands-on sessions on how to develop your own codes using FVM to solve simple problems and how to use commercial packages to solve complicated multiphase flow, turbulent flow and heat transfer problems. As the conclusion of the course, an attendee will be well prepared to understand the literature in this field, to follow more sophisticated state-of-the-art lecture series, to be able to solve simple problems by programming using FVM, and to begin the application of CFD to his or her areas of concern. This PhD course is aimed at persons who have but only have a very limited experience in this field, both recent graduates and professional engineers.
