Description: This course addresses some of the most relevant topics associated to Radio Resource Management (RRM) for small cell enhanced broadband wireless systems (e.g. LTE/LTE-A HetNet). With a scarce available spectrum, RRM aims at maximizing the efficiency of the system radio resource usage while providing and controlling the Quality of Service (QoS) according to the different traffic QoS requirements. The main contribution to future wireless system performance improvement will come from the introduction of additional small cells to complement traditional macro site installations, i.e. migrating towards heterogeneous network (HetNet) topologies. With small cells, RRM issues arise between the small and macro-cellular layers, and between the small cells themselves due to customer deployed small cell solutions. This development emphasizes the need for more distributed RRM as well as simplification of the management by auto-configuration and auto-optimization.
The course will review LTE/LTE-A procedures related to RRM. The main part will focus on the existing RRM framework for HetNets and new (distributed and centralised) RRM techniques for small cells, including inter-cell interference coordination and resource sharing, mobility handling, traffic steering and Self-Organizing Networks (SON) techniques. Current developments on dual connectivity and receiver-side interference suppression will be included as part of the course.
Prerequisites: basic knowledge of mobile and wireless communication systems as obtained through the M.Sc. engineering studies at Aalborg University is expected. For the exercises it is required to have access to Matlab, as well as experience with Matlab scripting.
