Description:
The 5G cycle of standardization has entered a mature phase. However, there is an abundance of state-of-the-art research topics that are not currently covered by 5G standardization. The aim of this course is to provide research insights in these topics and prepare the attendees for the research and development of beyond 5G systems.

Contents:

Introduction:
Overview of 5G standardization. Beyond 5G: kay aspects, standardization scope, challenges and approaches. Information- and communication-theory for beyond 5G systems. Beyond massive MIMO: intelligent surfaces. Advanced access networking algorithms. Data driven and machine learning assisted optimization of network operations. Non-terrestrial networks in 5G and beyond.

Teaching methods:
Lectures. Presentation by students.

Evaluation:
The attendees will be assessed based on the presentation of the beforehand assigned topics.

Learning objects:
Understanding the novelty, challenges and approaches for beyond 5G systems. Understanding of the information- and communication-theoretic models for beyond 5G systems. Understanding and working knowledge on advanced physical and link layer schemes tailored for beyond 5G systems. Understanding and working knowledge on novel network architectures, and the role and the potential of machine learning-aided network optimization.

Important information concerning PhD courses:
We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 3.000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately four months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year.
