Description: What is design thinking? Is it a process model? Is it a mind-set? Is it a set of tools? Is it all of it or is it something else?

Since the concept of design thinking was introduced more than 15 years ago, the understanding of design thinking has been diverse, and in many cases kept on a practitioner’s level.

This course is a research introduction to design thinking. In this course, we will tie the design thinking concept to earlier design research. You will get an introduction to the design thinking mind-set as well as the theoretical paradigm it is built upon. Through a hands-on and case based workshop format, we will help you gain a deeper understanding of the theoretical structure of design thinking. You will try and examine various process models and tools for design thinking as well as compare them to approaches from earlier design research. As a result, you will gain a deeper understanding of the inherent elements of design thinking and the methodological approach that is needed to have a successful outcome of a design thinking process. 

The target audience for the course are new PhD students within the area of design or scholars from other fields, who want to gain a deeper understanding of design thinking and apply design thinking to their field of work or research.

Important information concerning PhD courses: We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 3.000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately four months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year. We look forward to your registrations.
