Welcome to Crowdsourcing Human Insight at Scale (2021)
Description:
Crowdsourcing is a method for collecting data from a distributed labour force and then computationally synthesising the results in some meaningful ways. Through such combined knowledge and contributions of a crowd, new insights and applications can be derived. This course presents crowdsourcing as a tool for data collection and assessment. We present the main online platforms and their specific characteristics and suitability for different types of tasks. We specifically move beyond the well-explored use of crowdsourcing for data enrichment activities, such as image labelling and sentiment analysis. Instead, we discuss crowdsourcing case studies that address larger societal issues, support health and wellbeing, and serve specific niche communities. The course will furthermore detail how to structure individual contributions into meaningful and searchable knowledge structures. This is a hands-on course where students get to combine theory and practice. Students will collaboratively ideate, design, and test a small scale crowdsourcing solution that should provide meaningful insights into a specific problem beyond data enrichment. The work is done in small groups, and the organisers provide the funding required for crowdsourcing the required data. The target audience for this course are PhD students within the areas of Human-Computer Interaction, as well as other areas of Computer Science and Social Science with interest in collecting human insights at scale. Specific technical skills such as programming are not required for participation, but any expertise in designing and programming may come handy. Important information concerning PhD courses: We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 3.000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately four months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year. We look forward to your registrations.
