As a renewable and environmentally friendly energy source, biomass and its combustion for heat and power generation are gaining an increasingly important role worldwide. The physical and chemical properties of biomass fuels are significantly different with coals, which gives rise to new challenges in design and operation of biomass-fired burners and boilers. The objective of this 3-day PhD course is to provide a presentation on biomass fuels: the combustion and modeling. The course will cover most of the key issues: (1) solid bio-fuel feedstocks – growing, harvesting, handling and characterizing; (2) gas combustion chemistry and different tools for its analysis, from stoichiometry, equilibrium, kinetics to mixing; (3) traditional coal combustion – different conversion processes, main technologies, general modeling strategy and key modeling issues; (4) biomass fuels: differences with traditional coals and their implications in combustion and modeling; (5) different biomass combustion technologies used in the power industries (e.g., grate-firing, fluidized bed combustion and suspension firing): problems and solutions; (6) new biomass particle dynamics model, e.g., advanced tracking of big, non-spherical biomass particles in suspension-firing furnaces; (7) new biomass particle conversion model, e.g., advanced modeling of intra-particle conversion processes in big, non-spherical biomass particles; (8) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of biomass combustion in suspension-firing systems and in grate-firing systems: strategies and tips, cares to be taken, implementation of new models, etc.; (9) a number of demos, from fundamental chemical kinetic calculation to advanced implementation of new biomass-related sub-models in CFD simulation of complicated biomass combustion systems. The course is aimed at recent graduates and professional combustion or power engineers who have but only have a limited experience in this field.

Important information concerning PhD courses
We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 5,000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately three months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year. We look forward to your registrations.
