Description:
The technological world of today has been witnessing the increased complexity due to the rapid development of the process plants and the manufacturing processes. The computational complexity, the reliability problems and the restrictions in the communication make the ordinary control strategy for such large-scale complex systems expensive, difficult and insufficient.

The complexity arises in many fields in the form of the highly nonlinearities, the large order of the describing dynamical systems and the large number of subsystems which are interacting. To cope with the complexity several techniques have been proposed over the last few decades. These methods have recently been received a lot of attention again due to the ever increasing complexity of physical and man-made systems. These techniques find application in the variety of fields ranging from the electrical power systems, the hydraulic systems to the heat transfer, and the chemical processes. In the course, several methods will be introduced. These methods automatically simplify the modeling and control of the complex systems. In particular , several methods will be introduced for: Order reduction of large-scale systems System Approximation and control structure selection for complex systems Modeling and control of the cyber-physical systems

The tools and methods for simplification of complex systems can be used to explore many practical questions about the performance and behaviors of complex systems and helps to maintain tractability in the control and simulation process. However, in order to achieve an efficient and an optimal final outcome for the design, modeling and control processes, optimization needs to be used. Therefore the course ends up with a short survey of methods for: Optimization of complex systems.

The open source software tools will be introduced in the course. The application of the methods will be studied in the area of the energy systems.

Important information concerning PhD courses

We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 5,000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately three months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year. We look forward to your registrations.
