Welcome to Academic Writing in English, Fall
Description:
Good Academic Writing is vital to the success of any academic who wants to further his or her career. As an academic, it is expected that you publish and present. That is just the way it is.
It can be intimidating to write well in a non-native language and feel confident. This course will provide you with the skills you need to move forward confidently in your English academic writing. In addition to in-class time, you will get 1-1 time with me, work in small groups and have an online platform to ask questions and have them answered. I will provide you with infdividual feedback that will strengthen your skills.
We will look at:
- Publication Process
- What editors look for (based on instructor’s correspondence with editors)
- Peer Review Process
- Writing a letter to the editor (participants given tips from editors that instructor has contacted)
- Questions to ask yourself before you submit
- Plagiarism
- Punctuation for Academic Writing
- Effective Academic Writing
- Combining sentences and ideas smoothly
- Academic Words and Phrases
- Parts of a Journal Article (With tips on how to make each part effective)
- How to evaluate journal requirements
- Differences between British, American and Global English: How to know which to use
As your instructor, I bring an extensive background in Academic Writing instruction and editing. I taught Academic Writing at La Sierra University in Riverside, California and have taught this course extensively here in Denmark. I am committed to making this whole process easier for you and can’t wait to work with you.

Important information concerning PhD courses: We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 3.000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately four months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year. We look forward to your registrations.
