Welcome to cortical neuroplasticity & pain: linking fundamentals to the science og tomorrow

Description:

Neuroplasticity is a fundamental mechanism of the central nervous system (CNS) that enables us to grow and learn.   As a process, neuroplasticity can be facilitated or hindered.  What is of fundamental interest is how neuroplasticity can be modulated so as to achieve a desired outcome.  Increasing performance accuracy over a shorter period of time for a newly learned behaviour may be the desired outcome for an elite athlete and trainer.  Reducing the sensitivity of pain in an individual that no longer presents with an injury may be the desired outcome for a patient and clinician. This course reviews fundamental aspects of neuroplasticity in relation to learning and pain and uses these concepts as platform discuss the role neuroplasticity will have in driving medical breakthroughs. As inspiration the course will draw upon trending topics in neuroscience ranging from enhancing cognitive performance, longevity and rehabilitation after an injury.

Literature
Selected papers and book chapters will be announced to the participants shortly before the course.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of neuroscience and physiology.

Evaluation
The course will be evaluated based on contributions to predefined discussion topics requiring the student to have prepared questions and a short 5-10 min presentation (no slides) on a literature search assignment.

Important information concerning PhD courses We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 5,000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately three months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year. We look forward to your registrations.
