Welcome to Material Stories and Ethnographies - Non-Representational Theory, Design, Mobilities and Materialities

Description: This PhD course is aimed at PhD students within areas such as urban studies, human and cultural geography, urban design, city planning, cultural studies, political science, sociology, and anthropology. The course is methodologically framing narratives and visual and corporeal ethnographies on a theoretical background of the so-called ‘Non-representational Theory’, Design, Mobilities and Materialities. The course positions within the ‘Mobilities Turn’ with a particular emphasis on the ‘non-representational’ approaches from human geography and design. The aim is to build a trust-full learning-space for PhD students within the multi-disciplinary area of Mobilities study in its broadest sense. In the course the organizers presents state-of-the-art research with reference to their own research into design and Mobilities in the lecture format. The participants must prepare a one-page description of their PhD project and conduct a 5 minutes oral presentation of their project. Moreover, the participants will be engaging in two-to three field assignments where they will conduct short field studies in Aalborg and present these in the formats of ‘material stories’ and ‘visual ethnographies’. The participants will present their stories and ethnographies in plenary sessions. A modest amount of reading prior to the course is to be expected. There is an optional possibility to submit a short essay reflecting upon the course and assignment in relation to the participant’s PhD projects that in case of passing will earn the participants 5 ECTS course credits instead of 3. This is to be discussed with the course organizer during the course.

Important information concerning PhD courses: We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 5,000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately three months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year. We look forward to your registrations.
