Welcome to 'In search for an integral building culture - relations between the architectural volume and the urban surface'

Description: Present day building culture is governed by an increased number of interlinked cultural and environmental challenges, counting urban densification and climate changes among others. This PhD course seeks to explore an integral building culture that joins the sensuous discipline of architectural making and the large-scale analytical outlook of urban design in a bridging of these challenges.

Through an architectural and urban design theoretical perspective the course will try to map, discuss and experimentally explore the challenges, potentials, and possible critical means for formulating an integral building culture. In doing so the course seeks to juxtapose crossroads referring simultaneously to the art and engineering of joining elements at the architectural scale with spatial theories and design methods for joining elements across scale in the urban realm.

The intention of the course is to formulate research approaches to the crossings between architectural volume and the urban surface in connection with actual design strategies. Focus is upon outlining appropriate research methodologies within this cross-field.

 

Practical information: During the four-days, the course will include lectures, discussions, workshops and presentations. Day one will present theoretical and methodological perspectives on the subject matter; continuing into a discussion and workshop in day two and three; ending with an oral presentation on the final day. After the course there will be an opportunity to submit a paper to be reviewed and possibly selected for publication in an anthology proceeding the course. 

Prior to the course, the participants are required to prepare and submit a short statement describing a research problem in text and graphical illustration related to the PhD course theme as well to their own research. The statement must be submitted as a pdf file in 200 x 400 mm portrait format; the top 200 x 200 mm used for graphical illustration and the bottom 200 x 200 mm for text. The statement file must be emailed to mfri@create.aau.dk before October 1 2018.

Relevant literature will be distributed in well time before the course.

Important information concerning PhD courses We have over some time experienced problems with no-show for both project and general courses. It has now reached a point where we are forced to take action. Therefore, the Doctoral School has decided to introduce a no-show fee of DKK 5,000 for each course where the student does not show up. Cancellations are accepted no later than 2 weeks before start of the course. Registered illness is of course an acceptable reason for not showing up on those days. Furthermore, all courses open for registration approximately three months before start. This can hopefully also provide new students a chance to register for courses during the year.
