The PhD Supervision Process: Methods and Tools
Three-day PhD supervisor course 11/4, 15/5 & 6/6-2019, 9.00-16.00 at Aalborg Campus

The course is aimed at principal supervisors and co-supervisors at Faculty of Humanities. It includes three separate course days. A few hours of preparation must be expected before the course and there will be training of tools between the course days. The course language is English unless all participants speak Danish.
Learning objectives - after completion of the course you can/will have:
- identify challenging phases of the PhD project and upcoming crises
- reflect on your own supervision style in a broad perspective
- get new ideas from exchanging experiences with other supervisors
- acquired communicative tools for active listening and giving feedback
- identify the PhD students’ strengths and weaknesses
- adapt the supervision process, so the PhD student’s learning is optimized, including taking account of intercultural dimensions in the supervision
- clarify mutual expectations between you, the PhD student and other supervisors/people connected to the project
- supervise the PhD student to obtain efficient writing processes
Form and content
Teaching at the course alternates between presentations, working with tools and methods, and exchanging experiences related to supervision. There is a close and consistent relationship between the teaching and the participants´ own experiences. The following topics are included in the course:
▪ Supervision style
▪ Awareness of strong and weak points as a supervisor
▪ Insights into your PhD students' own perspectives
▪ Active listening – learn how to listen to your PhD student
▪ Writing tools and feedback methods
▪ Collaboration agreements
▪ Intercultural dimensions in supervision
▪ Exchange of experiences with other supervisors
▪ Alternating themes depending on the participants interests
Preparation before and in-between course days
Prior to course commencement, each participant must prepare a short case (maximum one page) from his or her own supervision. For example, how you communicate with your PhD student or how you try to help the PhD students dealing with time management, stress, lack of self-confidence, or writer´s block. Or the challenges of supervising foreign students with other university culture backgrounds. Between the first and the second course day our focus is on communication during supervision, and you will work with active listening at a supervision meeting. Between the second and the third course day, the participants do peer coaching in groups of supervisors together with their PhD students.
